Metro tiles – the modern classic
Metro tiles seem to be everywhere at the moment, from domestic settings to commercial projects the classic style is thoroughly modern. The style has very humble beginnings, originally a white gloss bevelled edged tile used in prisons and hospitals as it was very easy to maintain and cheap to produce.
The origins of metro tiles
The name originates from when it was used originally in the underground system in London, the Metro in Paris and the subways of New York. Metro tiles are distinctive 3” x 6” rectangular tiles in white and you can still see them in many underground stations around the world.
The classic or industrial look
The beauty of the metro tile is its versatility – it can be used for a classic or traditional look in kitchens and bathrooms with beautiful crackle glazing adding real authenticity.
